A Southeast Asian culture that is often overlooked is the Eurasian culture, which is a blend of European and Asian cultures. Eurasians are people with both European and asian descent and they are a very diverse group spread across Southeast Asia. Thier origins can be traced back to the colonial times. In this series we will explore their culture.
To start, in Malaysia and Singapore, most of the Eurasians are the Kristang people. They are of mostly Portuguese and Malay descent, with substantial descent from other ethnic groups such as the Indian and Chinese. They number just under 40,000 and are a living legacy of the cosmopolitan Portuguese port of Malacca.
In my next post I will write about 2 common Eurasian languages.
