The nation of Belize is divided into 6 districts.
An integral district of Belize, that has the same capital city as British Honduras ( for its last decade of existence ). The district of Belize is also home to the island of St George's Caye, where the important Battle of St George's Caye took place. The battle was a British victory that secured Belize's status as a British colony, helping to shape the nation's political and cultural landscape.
Another district is Cayo District. Cayo District borders Guatemala and is home to Belize's capital, Belmopan.
The next district, Corozal, has many villages and Pre-Columbian Maya ruins are found there as well.
Yet another district, Orange Walk District shares a border with both Guatemala and Mexico. The inhabitants of this district are mostly the descendants of Mexican Mayan Mestizos who seeking refuge from Mexican Hispanics, fled to this region in 1840.
Stann Creek District, is a district home to primarily Garifunas, with English as the district's primary language.
The Toledo district has diverse natural features which include rainforests, extensive cave networks, coastal lowland plains, and offshore cays. Toledo is home to a wide range of cultures such as Mopan, Kekchi Maya, Creole, Garifuna, East Indians, Mennonites, Mestizos, and descendants of US Confederate settlers.
