Ecuador gained independence from the Spanish Empire in the same war that Colombia gained independence from the Spanish Empire. It remained part of Gran Colombia until 1830.
Majority of Ecuadorians are Catholic Mestizos and the only official language is Spanish, just like Colombia.
Ecuadorian cuisine is famous for fried plantains and guinea pig served with potatoes and peanut sauce.

Ecuador's national flag since 1900. It is used alongside another flag that does not have the coat of arms. The difference between that flag and the national Colombian flag is that it has lighter shades than the Colombian one.
