  • English (47.7%)

  • Australian (46.3%)[N 3]

  • Irish (11.7%)

  • Scottish (10%)

  • Indigenous (4.6%)[N 4]

  • German (3.9%)

  • Dutch (2.2%)

  • Italian (1.5%)

  • Chinese (1.5%)


19.3% of the population was born overseas at the 2016 census. The five largest groups of overseas-born were from England (3.7%), New Zealand (1%), Mainland China (0.6%), Scotland (0.4%) and the Netherlands (0.4%).[126][127]

4.6% of the population, or 23,572 people, identified as Indigenous Australians (Aboriginal Australians and Torres Strait Islanders) in 2016.[N 5][126][127]

At the 2016 census, 88.3% of the population spoke only English at home. The other languages most commonly spoken at home were Standard Mandarin (0.8%), Nepali (0.3%), Greek (0.2%) and Italian (0.2%).[126][127]

At the 2016 census, the most commonly nominated religions were Anglicanism (20.4%) and Catholicism (15.6%), while 37.8% of the population cited no religion.[126][127]
